The report was published by MERCURY INFORMATION SECURITY SERVICES PTY LTD. ABN 70 603 857 585 in 2023. Author Edward FARRELL.

In my opinion his motive for publishing the report is because he is personally invested in the battle in the US over TikTok. Edward placed his reputation on the line when he and his colleague published a report on
TikTok casting it in a positive light. They were paid AUD70k for
this. Their reputation has probably been hurt by their actions and they have
decided to take it out on Internet 2.0. It was no
coincidence to me that the mail landed at the same time as Congress passed
the bill to ban TikTok in the US or force is divesture.

Why his reports are wrong.

While we encourage industry feedback Edward has based all of his opinions on test images that have never been offered to a customer and he represented these as live issues in his report. We stated this to him, but he misrepresented our statements
and plunged ahead on his hit piece task.

In detail the old 2021 Azure image he based most of his report on was never used by any customer as it was a pfSense version we were testing during R&D. It was a test image we thought we had removed completely from Azure. Azure is hard to use and there was a toggle we honestly forgot to click which would have permanently deleted it. Ed is a competent searcher and was able to go behind the Azure curtain and access this unused image. We told him this version was never used by any customer via email. We only sell licenses to the updated OPNsense version on AWS and via ISO. Azure customers have to use the ISO version as Azure marketplace currently does not support the image we need for OPNsense.
